  Pediatricians play an important role in the care of children with Down syndrome. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that all children with Down syndrome receive ongoing care from a pediatrician or other healthcare provider who is knowledgeable about the condition. The role of a pediatrician in caring for a child with Down syndrome may include: Diagnosis and evaluation : Pediatricians are often the first healthcare provider to notice signs of Down syndrome in a newborn. They can order diagnostic tests, such as a chromosome analysis, to confirm the diagnosis. They can also evaluate the baby for any associated medical conditions or developmental delays.
